Thinking about Girls in Media but not sure it's the right fit yet? Join us for a free Open House at Hōike Kauai Community Media on September 30, from 4:00-6:00 PM - no payment due, just come check it out.

Girls will get a real walk-through of the Hōike studio, see the equipment they'd be working with, and hear directly from us about what the year-long cohort looks like. This isn't just a class - it's the honor and opportunity to be the voice of Girl Scouts of Hawaii in media, producing real content that airs on Channel 54 and earning official Girl Scout badges along the way, all as part of the first program of its kind in the state.

What it costs. The program fee is $100 for the full MY27 program year, and that covers everything she needs to participate fully:

  • Girls in Media T-shirt
  • Snacks at every in-person session
  • Props and materials for her projects
  • 3 official Girl Scout badges earned throughout the year
  • Pupus at the end-of-year showcase and premiere

If she joins, here's what the year actually looks like. This is a full program-year commitment, running September through May - not a drop-in class. Here's how it breaks down:

  • October - Mobile & Social Media Storytelling, held Mondays from 3:30-5:30 PM on the 12th, 19th, and 26th, building her hands-on baseline production skills.
  • November - Hōike's Producer Certification Program, Mondays from 3:30-5:30 PM on the 16th, 23rd, and 30th.
  • December - No scheduled sessions over the holidays, with the option of a short virtual check-in if girls want or need one.
  • January 11 - A check-in and expectations reset before moving into independent production.
  • January-March - Independent production time, tied around cookie season. Girls complete a minimum of 4-6 hours total (roughly 2 hours a month), signing up on their own to use the studio or check out equipment for their projects.
  • Showcase & Public Premiere (date to be finalized) - The year culminates in a public premiere where girls present their finished PSAs, podcast episodes, interviews, and short stories to family, friends, and the community.

Along the way, girls are expected to come to every session in their Girls in Media shirt and Girl Scout uniform, show up ready to actively contribute ideas - the more creative and varied, the better the experience is for the whole cohort - and treat Hōike's studio and equipment with real care and professionalism. A signed caregiver media release is required before her first session, since her work may air publicly on Channel 54 and Hōike's platforms. She'll be representing both Girl Scouts of Hawaii and Hōike Community Media, so we're looking for girls who are ready to show up, follow through, and take that responsibility seriously.

Space in the cohort is limited to six girls, first-come, first-served, so this Open House is also your best chance to ask questions before spots fill.

Come with curiosity - that's all you need.
